Komodaru are ubiquitous at Shinto shrines, where they are stacked in impressive walls of branded barrels. The display serves multiple purposes: an offering to the kami, advertising for the brewery, and a visual symbol of prosperity. At festivals and celebrations, komodaru are opened in the kagami-biraki ceremony. The straw wrapping (komo) was originally functional, protecting wooden barrels during transport. Today the komo is purely decorative, as sake is stored in other containers. Komodaru remain one of the most recognizable visual symbols of Japanese sake culture.
