As a cultural term, the masu (wooden measuring box) represents abundance, celebration, and the ceremonial dimension of sake. Traditionally used to measure rice and sake, the masu has become an iconic symbol of Japanese drinking culture.

The standard masu holds exactly one go (180ml) and was historically used as both a measuring device and a drinking vessel. In modern izakaya, the masu-zake service — where a glass is placed inside a masu and sake is poured until it overflows into the surrounding box — symbolizes generous abundance. Drinking from the corner of a wooden masu imparts a subtle cedar aroma. The masu also appears in the san-san-kudo wedding ceremony and other rituals. Cedar (sugi) masu from Yoshino, Nara are considered the finest quality.
