Osake-rashisa
お酒らしさ
Definition
A tasting term meaning 'sake-likeness' — the quality of tasting authentically like sake rather than like wine, cider, or another beverage. Used to describe sake that expresses the fundamental character of rice-based brewing.
In Depth
Osake-rashisa is particularly relevant in the context of modern aromatic sake that can taste more like white wine or fruit juice than traditional sake. While fruity daiginjo may score well in competitions, some critics argue it has lost osake-rashisa. Conversely, a well-made junmai with clean rice character, gentle umami, and balanced structure is said to have strong osake-rashisa. The term is somewhat subjective and generational — older drinkers may define osake-rashisa differently from younger consumers.
