Kampai
乾杯
Definition
The Japanese drinking toast, equivalent to 'cheers.' Kampai literally means 'dry cup' — an invitation to drain your glass. In formal settings, all members of the group must wait for the kampai before taking the first sip.
Ausführlich
Kampai etiquette varies by formality. In casual izakaya settings, a quick group kampai starts the evening. In business settings, the most senior person (or the host) initiates the toast, often with a brief speech. Proper form involves raising your glass with one hand while supporting it underneath with the other. In hierarchical situations, holding your glass slightly lower than your superior's shows respect. After the initial kampai, drinking is generally relaxed, though toasts may recur throughout the evening. The cultural rule of never pouring your own drink means someone will always refill your glass — and you should reciprocate.
