Komodaru
菰樽
Definición
A sake barrel wrapped in woven rice straw matting (komo), used for ceremonial kagami-biraki cask-opening events. The cedar wood (sugi) of the barrel imparts a distinctive woody, resinous aroma to the sake inside.
En profundidad
Komodaru are made by specialized coopers using Yoshino cedar from Nara Prefecture, considered the finest cooperage wood for sake. The barrels typically hold 72 liters (4 to) and are assembled without nails or adhesive, relying on precise joinery and bamboo hoops. The straw wrapping serves both decorative and functional purposes, insulating the barrel and displaying the brewery's name and crest. Sake stored in komodaru for even a few days absorbs noticeable cedar character. While komodaru sake is an acquired taste, it is deeply associated with celebration and is often the first sake poured at Japanese New Year, weddings, and building inaugurations.
