Sakazuki
盃
Tanım
A flat, saucer-shaped sake cup used in ceremonial and formal occasions. The wide surface area of the sakazuki allows the drinker to appreciate the sake's color and aroma, and its shallow depth requires careful, deliberate sipping.
Derinlemesine
Sakazuki are deeply embedded in Japanese ceremonial culture. They are used in Shinto shrine rituals, wedding ceremonies (san-san-kudo, where bride and groom share three cups three times), New Year celebrations, and formal business occasions. The cups are often lacquered in red or gold, sometimes decorated with family crests or seasonal motifs. Stacked sets of three sakazuki in increasing sizes represent heaven, earth, and humanity. While rarely used for casual drinking, the sakazuki connects sake to Japan's spiritual and cultural traditions in a way no other vessel can.
